Retinoschisis (splitting of the retina into two layers)

Clinical signs:

1. Juvenile X linked retinoschisis

A. Foveal schisis: cystoid spaces with a “bicycle-wheel” pattern of radial striae
B. Peripheral schisis
C. Vitreous hemorrhage
2. Age-related retinoschisis

A. Immobile dome shaped elevation of the retina typically infrotemporally
B. May progress circumferentially

Management

A. Retinal examination with sclera indentation to exclude retinal break
B. A fundus contact lens evaluation
C. No treatment for foveal schisis (stellate maculopathy)
D. Surgical repair of RD
